tNCEA Citizen Science: empowering communities to gather environmental data
Axion Solutions is proud to be working with Natural England on the tNCEA Citizen Science programme. The initiative contributes to the development of national Survey Frameworks and a Resource Library that empower local communities to gather high-quality environmental data at scale.
“Contributing to the tNCEA Citizen Science programme to develop national Survey Frameworks that empower local communities to gather high-quality data.”
— Axion Solutions, tNCEA Programme
The programme
tNCEA — the test Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment — is one of England’s most ambitious environmental data programmes. It depends on rigorous, repeatable field methods that work whether the surveyor is a Natural England specialist or a community volunteer in their local nature reserve. The challenge is methodological quality at community scale.
Axion’s contribution
- Survey framework development for nationally-consistent environmental data collection
- Resource Library content — guides, protocols, training materials
- Field-tested methods that balance scientific rigour with community accessibility
- Stakeholder engagement across government, academia and citizen-science networks
Why citizen science matters
Environmental decisions need data at a granularity government agencies can’t cost-effectively collect alone. Community-gathered data — done well — fills that gap. The work on tNCEA helps make that “done well” reliable, repeatable and policy-grade.
Adjacent expertise we bring to other clients
The same disciplines we apply to tNCEA — survey methodology, data quality, accessible technical writing — also turn up in our work with charities doing impact reporting, and with London public-sector teams building evidence bases for funding decisions.
